Dentures are made from a variety of materials by using a myriad of procedures. The most common material that makes up much of a new denture is Acrylic. One of the attributes of acrylic, aside from its amazing clinical benefits, is that it is microscopically porous. Which basically means there are millions of tiny holes in it. If you were to look at a new denture through a microscope you would see this to be true.
Due to the properties of denture materials, it is essential that your new denture is well maintained. Here are some tips for caring for your denture:
1. Clean your denture after every meal
It is ideal if you can clean your denture after every meal, even just a quick rinse. When food residue mixes with saliva the two work together to form plaque and calculus around various areas of your denture. When calculus sets into the tiny little holes of the denture it can be very hard to clean off on your own. The most common places for calculus on a denture are behind your bottom front teeth and on the left and right sides of a top denture half way down the either side.
2. Use a soft bristle toothbrush
Denture teeth are much softer than natural teeth for good reason. We want them to wear faster than your natural teeth that they are biting against. We can replace denture teeth but your natural teeth are much harder to replace! With this fact in mind, we strongly recommend a soft toothbrush so you don’t polish away the denture teeth and its base over time. Choosing a hard bristle brush is among the most common mistakes made by denture wearers.
3. Leave denture out at night
Where possible it is a good idea to leave your dentures out a night time. We want your gums and the muscles supporting the denture to rest. If you find that you have very red and inflamed gums from time to time it could be due to overuse.
4. Annual Check-ups and Denture Cleans
It is a great idea to visit your EverythingDentures professional annually for a gum check and a professional denture clean. Your denture practitioner is trained to know your gums and as such can tell if things are not ideal and can give you tips on how to care for them better.
You’ll be amazed how good a professional denture clean can make your dentures look and feel. For a professional denture clean, EverythingDentures use ultra-sonic technologies which is similar to how jewellery is cleaned. This will make your smile shine and glisten again.
5. Denture Reline
A denture reline is a process that should be considered when there have been changes in your gums. Over time your gums shrink when there are no natural teeth to hold them in place. In principle, the denture reline process is where your denture professional will make the fitting surface of your denture represent how your gums look at the time of treatment. Some medications and weight-loss can make your dentures loose. If you find this to be the case, give your local EverythingDentures clinic a call. An EverythingDentures professional can do an in-chair clinical test to show how much your gums have resorbed (shrunk) over time and then provide advice on making your denture fit well. EverythingDentures can undertake a denture reline in one day.
